QUESTION:Got a coldcall from a local hvac dealer (Twin Cities/MN) and had their
guy out last night. Great presentation, hugh number of satisfied
customer letters, company checks out with BBB. But, I have to decide
by 4PM today to get a special 1,000 discount. I'm looking for
feedback as to prices, just trying to find out if this is a decent
deal or if it is way out there. Existing home built in 1954,
replacing A/C and gas furnace (hiboy). They are proposing ICP products (didn't specify brand). A/C: CAC4024. Furnace: 9MPV75. 92% 2-stage
furnace, variable speed blower. Don't know the SEER on the A/C. They
are adding one return for a basement room that doesn't have one.
Adding the side vent for the furnace. Removing the old units (Carrier
units from the 1970s.) 10 yr parts and labor warranty on both A/C and
furnace, with lifetime on compressor and heat exchanger, parts only. 2
year temperature performance warranty. 2 year full installation
warranty. Includes Aprilaire humidifier and hepa-type furnace filter. $14,785 good until April 1, $13,785 if we sign up today. Any feedback
from you pros out there?
ANSWER: I'm sure you all knew this already but the answer was robbery! Jabs was
right, I should have asked if he was wearing a condom before I let him in
the door. I called a local firm that has a real good rep in the area,
family owned on the third generation. The guy came over, suggested several
things the other guy didn't, and his quote - 5895 for a 92% efficient Amana
furnace and a 14 seer Amana A/C, installed of course. Add on a Honeywell
flowthrough humidifier and media air filter for another 470 and he is at
less than half, heck nearly 1/3 of the first guy's nearly 14k. He offers Maytag (Nordyne bought the brand, I guess) for another 340. I'm
inclined to go with the Amana since it has more of a track record - anyone
got an opinion on the Maytag/Nordyne brand? I know I'm a HO and I'm
supposed to be over at alt.home.repair, but what the heck, you can always
run me off!
