QUESTION:I am hoping someone here can help me with the following problem: I live in a condo and have an Armstrong "one piece" furnace and AC
unit. I believe the heating and cooling unites are combined in this
one unit (all of it is inside, there are no outside parts to this
system). The unit is approximately 5-6 years old. When trying to start my heat this year, I find it won't. I haven't
used the furnace since April (although I did use the AC fine all
summer). When I turn the thermostat to "heat", the following things
happen: 1) The furnace makes a loud rumbling noise, as it does when it is about
to start blowing hot or cold air (depending on season). This continues
for 7 minutes before it shuts down 2) During that 7 minutes, I hear a "crackling" noise approximately 5-10
times. When that crackling happens, I see a blue flame trying to start (pilot light?). The blue flame appears for 2 seconds then stops. I
assume something is trying to ignite the pilot but can't. I followed the directions on the furnace to relight the pilot light (turn gas off, wait 5 mins, turn it back on, set thermostat to "heat"
and wait for it to light). I read something on the furnace about it
being able to light itself. Do I need to unscrew the access door in front of the pilot and use a
match? Any ideas why my furnace won't light?
ANSWER: Sounds like you have a MagicPak, which has an intermittent pilot. There are
probably warning stickers saying "DO NOT TRY TO MANUALLY LIGHT PILOT" The cracking is the intermittent pilot. I have worked on newer models which
have direct spark ignition. You need a qualified person working on this to
trouble shoot the safety switches, the control module and the gas valve.
Could be many different things. Faulty safety switch, module not sending
enough volts to gas valve, dirty flame sensor. Call a Pro.
