Armstrong furnace

QUESTION:

Now that natural gas prices in my area (northeast Ohio) are going through the roof, I'm considering replacing my old (40 years at least) Moncrief. I'm seriously considering either an Armstrong SX80 or SX90. Any comments?

ANSWER:

We've just started doing more with Armstrong. The SX models are being replaced with a newer design, mostly cosmetic. I really like the SX80E if you go 80%. It has the option of sealed combustion, meaning you can bring in outside air just like on the 90% models. Also has 2 stage heat, a real comfort feature. The SX90 is on the order of the Lennox G26 but has industry standard Honeywell controls, not Lennox proprietary, and has a stainless steel primary heat exchanger where the Lennox has an aluminized type. 5 year parts warranty is standard. Make sure it is sized & installed properly. Also, if a chimney is involved, it probably will need a metal liner kit.
