QUESTION:I bought some of the blue furnace filters that people here have
recommended for biofilters. They are about 1/2-inch thick, and have a
square mesh plastic sheet supporting (plastic?) fibers. They do not
have the metal support sheets on each side, like more commonly
available furnace filters I have seen. They are marketed by Frost
King - Thermwell Products Co.,and are labeled as washable and
"recycled" which I think means recycled plastic.
The reason for this post is that my pond got a white bubbly froth
on the surface after I put these blue furnace filters in my biofilter.
Worried that they might be treated with something, I have removed
them. I washed the furnace filters with a garden hose before using.
Does anyone know if these filters are dangerous to fish, and how they
should be treated before use?
ANSWER: I think those filters are made of some kind of fiber. I'm racking my brain
to identify it. . .excelsior maybe. I hosed mine off before putting it in
the filter system, but still got a little residual foaming (not much). It's
been running for 4 days and no red flags from the residents yet.
