QUESTION:According to ANSI/ASME B31.1 Power Piping, Non- Boiler External is the test
pressure 1.5 times the operating pressure or the design pressure? Please
correct me if I am incorrect.
ANSWER: Thats correct! The test pressure is usually left for a 24 hour period under the
hydrostatic pressure. I do not recall the allowable amount for thermal
contraction or pressure drop, but I think it is 5% but don't trust me.
Regardless of the code, it will be determined per whatever municipality is in
authority over the jobsite. Since the code isn't very explicit re: boiler
construction, the codes are being rewritten at present. My company has been
asked by the state licensing board to participate in a workshop to upgrade the
boiler test questions and codes for welding. I want to say to the group the
questions asked by the state on the questionaire scares the hell out of me for
people in the future to ever obtain a license It is chocked full of garbage
that has nothing to do with the trade but rather to profile the applicant in
his way of thinking. In my opinion a welder does not need to know how to
operate or wire a boiler(electrician) or to have knowledge of the lenght of the
flame rod needed. Sorry to write a novel on this but I thought the future
boiler contractors might need to know whats in their future to become a
licensed boiler contractor.
