Balance valves/line of Boiler feed pumps?

currently having trouble finding any information on balance valves/line on
boiler feed pumps.

Give an explanation of balance valves and leak off valves built into
designs.
I know the purpose of leak off valves and have diagrams of balance lines and
valves but what is there actual purpose?
