Retrofit existing gas furnace with power vent?
QUESTION:Long story short, I'm curious to know if a home-owner and or a
proffessional can retrofit an existing, approximately 20 years old,
Weil-McLain gas-fired boiler with a power vent so that it can be
disconnect from the chimney. I have no idea if power vent systems can
be installed on any relatively modern boiler or if the boiler needs to
have certain equipment or meet certain specifications before power
venting is an option. The boiler continues to run very well and I
don't intend to replace it so that I can remove it from the chimney.
ANSWER: If you are going to all of this expense, why not replace the boiler with a 95% boiler and add an indirect hot water heater. I don't know your locale,
but the energy savings of the new boiler and water heater will save you a
good amount of money. Since your boiler is 20yo this makes alot of sense.
You can even go ahead and do some zoning, and other fun stuff too. Radiant
flooring, towel warmers,
