Boiler Rooms

QUESTION:

As some of you may have heard, my unit was broken into on Friday. The back door to my unit (the door where everyones storage units are) was kicked in and needs to be replaced. Luckily, I have an alarm system, so whoever did this was not able to get away with much.
I bring this up for a few reasons:
1. This happened in broad daylight....my alarm system was activated at 11:38 am.
2. We continue to have problems locking doors and gates....there was no forced entry into the storage room doors that lead to the gateway and the officer said that they were unlocked. He also said the gate going to the alley was unlocked.....I know that we have talked about these things at great length during association meetings, but it is time that we do something about it.
3. There are increasingly more kids in these units.....obviously we don't want this happening to anyone, but the stakes are raised by a lot when we think about what could potentially happen.....again this happened in the middle of the day!
4. The windows to the boiler rooms are frequently wide open. I have no idea who is ever even in those rooms, but we need to consider doing something about that. I know that I have put paper blinds in the boiler room next to mine only to have someone remove them.
5. The officer that came to check my place told me that all he had to do.....and I don't want to kick a dead horse about the front gate, but.......was lift the spike on the courtyard side of the gate and push the doors open.....NOT SECURE at all!
I don't know when the next meeting is scheduled for but some of these things....like the boiler room windows and finding a way to replace the locks on the gates and storage room doors with locks that either self lock or require a key to exit have to be a priority.
I have talked to several people about this, but what's the next step? Any ideas? Do we need to form a committee within the association to do these things?

ANSWER:

I'm sorry to hear about your unit. I agree with you 100%.
