Chelate boiler water treatmen

QUESTION:

One of the latest ideas for boilerwater treatment for steam boilers is a chelate process, which "dissolves" scale by attracting the calcium and magnesium ions. Does anyone have any experience with these treatments: are they effective, what chemicals should be used and in what concentration, and are there any problems to watch for?

ANSWER:

Actually scale protects the boiler. The problem with scale is when you get too much of it. I've a strong feeling that the recent problems with boilers is caused more than anything else by fancy water treatments applied by people too lazy to carry out regular washouts. Treating boiler water is an exact science and has to be applied precisely according to the water used. Too much alkali causes cracking in the steel, and acidic water causes etch pits.
