Carrier gas furnace intermittent problem
QUESTION:I have a 7 year old carrier gas furnace with condensate pump.
Occassionally the pump switch fails to trigger and all power is cut
thru the safety to the furnace. I have a spare pump sitting around
and some day I will clean the switch in the pump or replace it but on
those few occassions when it locks ups I give the pump a slap and all
starts up. That is just history and I don't believe it has a connection with my
problem but I mentioned it just in case. Last night the blowers were going but there was no flame. I slapped
the pump a few times though since the power wasn't cut I didn't think
it was a factor. I started reading directions and reset the firebox
overheat switch. Turned the power back on. The thing starts up and
in a little more than a minute the fire starts up. Unfortunately
after a few minutes the flame goes out and I get a LED code 13 which
means the firebox safety overheated and cut the flame. So I try a couple of more times with the same results and I decide to
give up and call for service. I leave everything on... the blowers
are blowing but the flame is out. Before calling for service I
decide to check the websites thru google to see if there is any info
there. After about an hour I notice it is warm. So now I look and the temperature is up 6 degrees, everything is
working perfectly. I should add that I did change the furnace filter
but I did that early on, and I tried the reset several times after
changing the filter.
ANSWER: Sounds like you already know the answer to your question. I recommend
getting a qualified Carrier tech to service your system, clean and inspect
it, and get that condensate pump fixed. Otherwise, it sounds like you have a neglected, hacked-in system. If you
want it to run properly, you need to maintain it properly.
