Changing furnace filters--how often?

QUESTION:

My wife and I are new homeowners and don't have a clue whether it should be every couple weeks, months, 6 months, whatever.

ANSWER:

First, measure your filter, and next time you're out shopping, pick up half dozen filters.
( they're cheap! )
then
During the heating season, get into the habit of checking the filter once a month....
( first Saturday of the month ) If it looks "fuzzy", or dirty, change it!
I have mixed feelings about the newer "pleated" air filters. They filter out more particles, but they really reduce the air flow. Unless your furnace fan/chamber is built to accomodate pleated filters, I'd avoid them.
