Waste oil furnace plans wanted
QUESTION:Any one have an idea how to make a small workshop heater that
burns used motor oil?
ANSWER: I currently use a 400,000 BTU waste oil heater to heat my 8000 SF machine
shop. It is a German built unit that is EPA approved. You cannot see a trace
of smoke coming out the exhaust. I have owned and maintained it for about 10
years. The principle that it operates on is very simple. It is a glorified
smudge pot. It has a fire chamber that is essentially an 18" diameter by 12"
tall chamber. The oil is kept about 1/4" deep and is just a burning pool.
What makes it clean and efficient, is a secondary ceramic chamber above that
has air blowing into it from a blower. Most of the heat comes from this
chamber. it is essentially an afterburner. On high, the system uses about 2
gallons per hour. I burn oil, kerosene, transmission fluid, diesel - all
usually free. The brand of my heater is "Kroll" and is distributed out of
Great Neck, NY.
