Gas furnace or fireplace - which more EFFICIENT?

QUESTION:

I observed that gas has gone up 25% this year. Someone posted back that you cannot do that kind of side by side comparison. I noted that I supplied the price of gas in cost per therm. That is like cost per gallon, only using a different measurement. You can directly compare the $1 per therm cost this year to the 80 cents per therm cost last year. It is totally valid to do that, just like I can say that 59 cents a gallon for gasoline in 1975 (which I saw on the Rockford Files today) is about 1/3 of the $1.70 a gallon price I filled up with today.

ANSWER:

Yes, but when the original question was why the bills for this winter appear to be significantly worse than JUST the price of gas would account for, and the bills are listed month by month, you do need to consider degree days when comparing year to year differences, as well as the cost of the gas per therm to decide if the significant increase in the total cost is likely to be due to more than just the gas price.
