Electric Furnace Filter

QUESTION:

We are thinking about replacing the fiberglass filter in our furnace with an electrical type in hopes that it will decrease the amount of dust (and presumably pollen) that accumulates in the house. Most types I've seen are large box-shaped contraptions that have to be installed by the company and are rather expensive (several hundred dollars and up?). Recently, I noticed, in a flyer from the local hardware store, a $100 electrical filter that's the same small size as the fiberglass filters, but has a transformer that one supposedly plugs into a wall outlet. Does anyone have any experience with such filters (either the fomrer or latter type)? Is it effective, especially the cheaper kind? Any comments
/suggestions / experiences on any of these types will be appreciated.

ANSWER:

I will start by saying that a simple 30/30 ESF or pleated is sufficient in most homes. Get these from a local filter company. The electronic, electrostatic, treated and other HEPA types on the market are not only unsuitable for most homes, but because of the negative effects, ie. ozone from EAC's, the breeding ground created by electrostatic, the potential for chemical reactions and reactions from most treated filters, and the lack of normal or borderline air flow from HEPA or HEPA type I see no problems with your question. You put in either and then in a few months call me. I will be happy to explain in detail and show you why these methods are not the most effective, efficient and safe methods available today. If you want the best air sanitization with documented proof and results feel free to contact me. If you want the old ineffective methods that do not cut the mustard even on a limited basis you get yourself and EAC or electrostatic filter.
