QUESTION:We would like to spend a few days in Death Valley National Park. I have
read some reviews of Furnace Creek Ranch and most think it is overpriced and
run down. However it has a great location. Are there any better options?
ANSWER: The Furnace Creek Inn up the road. Only open mid-Oct to mid-May. Very
Nice. Comfortable. Quiet. Native stone, wood, plaster. No chrome or
plastic glitz here. A throwback to an earlier time, when leisure and
lounging were what wintertime desert resorts were all about. Like
entering a time warp to the '30s and '40s, but with all the amenities of
the 21st century. Been there several times. My kind of place. $250 to $350
per night, but might be able to get discounted through internet or special
packages. Yes, it's twice the Ranch prices, but you get what you pay for.
More, actually. The "Ranch" is basically a glorified motel.
