Gas furnace exhaust condensing?
QUESTION:I used to have a heat pump. I hated it and switched to a gas furnace. No
exhaust ducts existed, so they had to install one. What is happening is the
exhaust fumes are condensing and dripping out of the seams on the 6"
galvaninzed double-wall exhaust pipe. It is an 80% furnace. The exhuaust
is 3" dia for about 30" vertically coming out of the furnace, then opens to
a 6" pipe for about an 18' horizontal run with a slight slope (this is
where the water leaks out), then about a 22' vertical run through 2 floors
and then out the roof. In the summer it was leaking, and the contractor said it was because the
water heater exhaust was condensing, so he switched me over to electric
water, and it quit. Now the furnace does it!! He said he is going to
adjust something to make it burn hotter, that way the fumes will be hotter,
and maybe will not condense until they get ouside. Can someone give me their opinion on this matter?
ANSWER: First off don't let that guy back in your house. You don't overfire a
furnace to cure other problems without serious consequences. What size is your furnace? Sounds like you have way to much pipe for
just about anything on the market.
