Furnace Filter Frame

QUESTION:

The size of the intake duct on the furnace is 12" x 12". How do I know if a filter of that size is big enough? Right now there is a much larger filter flopping around inside the blower box at the bottom of the furnace but it is clearly not effective since it is not mounted properly and has a several inch air gap around it.

if it was me i mite think of geting a 1 in by 1 in by 1 in shannel broke (made with a sheet met. brake) ands pop rivit from the in side at a big a angle as i can to make a 16 by 12 or biger a 12 by 24 would be nice but i bet thatr would be to steep a angle i have had the fiolter channel made 2 in deep and usaed 2 in on the back and cut the sides to 1 in and added 1 in in the back/bottem laving a slot to remove and install the filter and a cover toi cover the slot a space gard type filter would be nice and not nead cleaned varry offen butt the sheet tin banging would be work for a grean tin banger butt the space gards com in like 24 by 24 or someing and is like
1/2 a ft theck and bite run 300$$ but in this app onew time a year or two years change wouyld be a change and forget
