furnace filter replacement help!
QUESTION:The previous owner of my house "kluged" together a furnace filter that just
isn't right. I have searched and search for the proper replacement size filter,
but cannot seem to locate a good fit. It is a Carrier heat pump, approx 10 years old.
ANSWER: What size would be the correct one? You may need to fabricate a bracket to hold a standard filter size if
yours is not one. That's what I did on my old Carrier unit. The
furnace filter opening is about 14 x 27. I fabricated a special
holder so a 14x25x1 filter will fit. Some angle brackets with
wing-nut hold downs keep it in place. To test it , get a piece of plexiglass and cover the side of the air
handler (simulating the side cover) and switch on the blower...make
sure the filter is not bending or pulling off the base when the blower
comes on. Alternately, one of those reusable 'electrostatic' filters come in
only one size and you have to adapt it to fit yours. I used one of
those for awhile but it seemed to reduce airflow too much so I went
back to a PrecisionAire pleated paper filter.
