Furnace Filter Replacements
QUESTION:After reading about how close to useless the cheapie fiberglass filters are (44
cents), I sprang for the cadillac 3M filter ($9). The instructions say to
replace every 3 months, but after one month it's filthy. Other experience? Opinions?
ANSWER: I use the cheapie fiberglass filters. I used to be able to get some stuff
called Filter Kote that I sprayrd them with that made the dust stick to them.
This worked very well and the only place the filter would even have any dirt
would be just on the face of the filter. I used this for a couple or three
years and could no longer get the Filter Kote easily. I then experimented with
WD-40. I sprayed the filters(whole case) with WD 40 then spread them out in
the sun for a full day to remove the volatile parts of the spray. This stuff
WORKS. The proof being after 8 years in this house I finally had my AC
professionally serviced. This included cleaning inside and outside coils. The
guy said the inside coils did not need cleanig at all but did it anyway. He
wanted to know how I kept it so clean and thought it was pretty incredible when
I showed him. He could not believe this was the first time in 8 years it had
been cleaned. Forget the demos you have seen with the black pepper and don't
waste your money on expensive filters. This works. BTW waitng until you cant see light through the filter is too late. You have
probably gone about twice too long if they are in this shape.
