What is this hole in the heating system?
QUESTION:I need help identifying this.
I don't know the purpose of this hole/vent in the heating system, its
pictured at

http://members.rogers.com/smendis/files/images/ductCloseup.jpg What is it called and whats its purpose? I am finishing the basement, what can be done to it or can it be
encased in the drywalled ceiling?
There is a damper on it, does it need to be adjusted?
ANSWER: hat is a return, as others have stated, for the basement, HOWEVER, there
might be a problem in using it. I dont see a filter provision at the
furnace...since they tagged the side and all....bet you have a filter
upstairs in a filter grill tho....and if that is the case, unless you are
going to put in a filter grille when you finish the return...as that is a
take off, I would remove it, and seal it.
