Furnace Fuel Oil Part

QUESTION:

I really don't want to buy another 100 gallons of #2 fuel oil (the minimum purchase from the co I buy from) since spring's coming on here in the south.... Can I buy a couple dozen gallons of Kerosene from the pump down at the corner gas station to run on for a few weeks, or will I screw up the burner?

ANSWER:

It's probably not such a good idea to buy the Kero. Kero is a lighter fuel. Although your furnace/burner can probably be tuned for kero (check the furnace and burner manual for their requirements/restrictions before considering a re-tune), I assume it's properly set up now for #2 oil. If you used kero without adjusting the burner, my guess is that, being a lighter fuel, there would be less backpressure from the nozzle, more fuel would end up in the firebox, resulting in the burner running rich. That would give you a lot of smoke, and probably considerable soot deposits in the heat exchanger. I'd suggest you stick with what the furnace was tuned for. What you don't use this spring you can use next year.
