Furnace Humidifier

QUESTION:

I just had a new furnace installed and as part of the installation I had them install a humidifier. It's the type that runs water over a metal evaporation pad and lets any unused water drain out the bottom.
Now I've never owned a furnace or a furnace humidifier before, but I don't think the humidifier is working correctly. If I understand the the skimpy instructions that came with it correctly, in order for the solenoid controlled water valve to open, the humidistat should be in a demand position (ie wanting water) AND the furnace blower should be on. In my installation, the water valve opens and water runs soley on the demand of the humidistat. What this causes is a a constant stream of running water going down the drain when the furnace blower is not running. I might as well punch a hole in my water pipe. The guys who installed the furnace are trying to convince me that that's the way it's supposed to work, but it just doesn't make sense. The furnace and installers were provided by a home warranty company and they don't seem to do ANYTHING correctly the first time.

ANSWER:

Some furnaces have a humidifier terminal on their controller board and if yours does then it is wired incorrectly or has failed. If there is no humidifier terminal then your installation is missing a current relay that is used to sense that the blower motor is on.
