QUESTION:My home has a 1994 100,000 Btu Multi-poise Oil Furnace (Inter-City
products) Last maintenance was performed in Dec.(Set flame with Digital
Volt Meter, Set draft over fire, Air filter change) Yesterday I discovered
that the heat exchanger was full of soot (about 80%). The only reason I
noticed was the black smoke coming out of the chimney, no other symptoms
was observed. The furnace has a Beckett Burner, and I was told that the
nozzle should be replaced yearly. The oil filter has not been changed in
two years.
ANSWER: I thought that might catch someones eye!. If you shunt the two wires for
the flame sensor within ten seconds of start-up, you attach a vom to the
two (yellow) wires and set the air adjustment til you reach 300 ohms. This
is supposed to be the ideal fuel/air mixture. It seems to have worked very
well since the furnace was installed.
