QUESTION:Jim did not hook up motor to direct voltage to see if the computor card
was not turning on 2 speeds at one time and causing motor to over amp. Now
he could put his amp meter on each 120 volt leg going to motor. You can tell
this out in just a second to see problem. You got a new motor from Lennox
for nothing and Jim got a extra hour or so labor out of you for nothing by
changing a good motor. Now if you was having to pay for the motor he would
have killed you. Jim broke it off in you a little and you was proud of him.
ANSWER: OK, so the tech didn't know everything. I will tell you that there may
have been some steps I left out of what he tested. I know that he did
override the control board to test the motor directly; I'll see if I
can get his email and let him post everything he did. But now I want to ask you a question: If you can't diagnose a problem
for someone via email, because you can't see the furnace in front of
you, why do you think you can critique a techs' repair of the system
remotely either? In order to do it, you have to assume that I have
relayed every fact accurately. Which is an assumption you already know
you can't make, because I'm not an HVAC repair person and as so many
have pointed out, I'm just an idiot homeowner. Once again, you seem to want to have it both ways, as long as there is
angle that exists that lets you call me stupid. Go ahead, call me
stupid. Call me whatever. But everytime someone responds to this post,
you are defeating the purpose of your gang by giving me more
information. I can, and will, go on playing the game for as long as
you all wish me to. I enjoy it more than you all do, as I have the
freedom of making mistakes in the area of repair discussion - you all
don't. How many flamewar posts did I read amongst the "experts"
themselves when some one called a gas a liquid, or couldn't figure out
a formula for heat loss, etc, etc, etc. If you want me to shutup, quit replying to my posts (Don't laugh at
him billy, you are only encouraging him). As far as the tech's labor charges, and your accusation that he "broke
it off in me", you couldn't be further from the truth. I thought I
detailed this before - because I was watching him, there was no way he
could of charged me for parts I didn't need. He may have been able to
do it to someone else. But I talked to him. He talked to me. That's
why I called him a professional. I got to know him well enough during
the 3.5 hours he was here that I came to believe in him, and his
abilities. He explained what he was doing, and why he thought whatever
the next step he was about to take was the right one. He wasn't
looking for ways to sell me parts I didn't need..... he was trying to
repair the problem. So in hindsight, maybe there were things he could of done differently.
I suppose in your 40 years you always made the right decisions? So
many here have already told me of times when they don't get it right
either. As we are all human (well OK, maybe not you, PJ or Bill) I
expect mistakes to be made. In the end, he was here for 3.5 to 4 hours, I got a new motor, cap and
control board for $165. And $65 of that was the trip charge. He
learned some things, I learned some things. $100 for all that I
learned was more than reasonable, let alone walking out of the deal
with, from an electrical/electronic perspective, a new furnace. I've
shared as much detail as I have with all of you so that a new tech, or
a homeowner could learn. Turtle, it's obvious that yot have a bad case of PJItis and no longer
need any more information from anyone either, because you are perfect
and never make mistakes. But, there are others here who can use it.
Maybe homeowners, maybe techs. I hope that one of you gets a service
call for a newer lennox unit, remembers what I have posted, takes all
the diagnostic steps he/she should, and maybe, just maybe, save
themselves and the homeowner some time and money. If not, that's ok
too. But as I've said so many times, I can't see how giving free
information ever hurt anyone. I did read a post from one of the regulars who gave info; because he
knew that even with that the person would most likely screw the job
up. More money for you guys. So what if they kill themselves or their
family? If it wasn't the furnace, it would have been something else ... maybe the reroofing attempt .. maybe the new deck addition ...
maybe being an asshole on the freeway. If they kill themselves, well,
the gene pool just got a little stronger, didn't it? Go read the
darwin award site. I'm sure there are many who died trying to fix
their furnace or _whatever_.
