QUESTION:A major noreaster has been predicted for the eastcoast (mid atlantic
and new england states) starting late Sunday night. Things I'll be doing over the weekend to prepare: 1) Top-off the generator gas supply 2) Make sure snow shovels are in order 3) bring in extra dry firewood 4) (I have a years supply of these items already) Top off food
supplies, and top off other supplies such as TP, smokes, beer, etc... 5) check over vehicals, make sure the 4x4 locks in and all, check tire
chains, etc... 6) secure outdoor items and prepare for high wind. 7) top off and double check all alt light sources, such as kerosene
for the oil lamps, fresh candles, check flashlights and flashlight
batterys. 8) check all alt comms, test radios, etc... 9) anything else I can think of that needs doing.
ANSWER: Water holds an incredible ammount of heat. So, yes, a bit pan of hot water
will give out heat for awhile. As I remember, my friends did turn on the
stove, but by the time they got home it was something like 45F indoors. As a heating guy, I can arrange all kinds of unsafe ways to get a furnace
running "just once" to get the house warmed up. But, I didn't know about th
is until much later. I would have gone there, and got their furnace running
"just once" and then get on the phone and find the repair parts for them in
the morning. Gas powered lights such as our "Coleman lanterns" are supposed to put out a
bit of heat.
