QUESTION:I'm about to buy a home, and one in particular is absolutely perfect except
for one thing: It's got oil heat. The furnace is two years old (a Heil), and
there's central air, too, so I'd be hesitant to replace the whole thing. I
haven't lived with oil heat since I lived with my parents 33 years ago.
Obviously, nobody knows where the hell the price of oil is going (except a
small handful of cigar-smoking suits who have lunch with GWB), so that's not
an issue. But, do these furnaces tend to require much more care than gas
units?
ANSWER: Rochester NY. If you see an existing home with hot water heat, it's usually
a very old house with the big iron radiators. If the heating systems are
renovated, the vast majority end up with forced air. In new construction,
forced air is the norm, although there's the occasional two million dollar
showcase home with tricky heating arrangements.
