QUESTION:Furnace: Brand on the outside of the unit is "Universal," Seattle,
Washington, but there are "Honeywell" (electrical?) components, and a (newer) "Beckett" blower.
ANSWER: The original burner was replaced by the newer Beckett flame-retention
burner. The newer burner in an older furnace probably gives you an
efficiency factor of around 68%. The original burner was about 50-55%.
The Honeywell controls are well known and standard even today. BTW, the
reason your heat exchanger is cracked to begin with is because it was old
and the addition of the much hotter "blue flame" burner stressed it to the
cracking point. Not an uncommon occurance when putting a Beckett (or other
brand, and there are others) flame retention burner in an older furnace.
If you buy a new oil furnace, keep the Beckett, and probably the Honeywell
stac control too, to use on the new unit. Should save you $400-$600.
