QUESTION:I am a homeowner, and I need some help from the experts. I got
home tonight and my oil furnace was out again. The house temp is
already down do 58 degrees, and there's NO WAY I'm going to call the
service tech to come tomorrow, on Easter Sunday.
My problem appears to be with the Honeywell R8184G 4009
Protectorelay Oil Burner Control. It has a red reset button, which I
push. There is a buzz, but the furnace does not come on. After
awhile the button pops back out and a red light on the side of the
unit comes on. Here's why I'm upset. This is the third time in the past 4 years
that this has happened. The last 2 times the service tech came and
replaced the whole unit, and charged me for a fortune for the service
calls and the new units.
Now it looks like the same story all over again. I'll call on
Monday, the tech will come while I'm away, and when I get home
I will probably have another unit installed, with another big service
bill. I'm sick of this. Can anyone suggest what the problem may be.
Is this a troublesome unit, or is there a problem in the furnace or
motor, or is my service tech just ripping me off?
I'm very ready to call another heating company. This is getting
me quite angry.
ANSWER: Time for a change. Call another hvac service company. Explain to the service
manager your problem, and request their most skilled and experienced oil
burner service tech. Tell them you want to sign up for a yearly
maintenance/furnace tune up. The red reset button should be pushed no more than once. If the burner fails
to ignite, its time to call a service technician. Shop arount until you find a
competent one.
