Furnace Thermostat

QUESTION:

I discovered this morning(cool house) that the central gas furnace did not come on and run overnight. When I switch the furnace to on, it comes on and blows warm air as normal. However, it will not come on set to auto, even if I set the temp to 90 degrees. When I remove the thermostat cover and observe the mercury tube(switch), I see the mercury flow back and forth in the tube. When the slide arm up to 90, the mercury goes to the left end of the tube with the wires are attached. I can hear a loud "click" like a relay switch, coming from the vents/furnace but the furnace never comes on. I also see a small spark in the tube, when I hear the click. I am not sure if the problem is in the thermostat or a relay on the furnace. I am trying to diagnose the problem, before calling a repairman if needed. If it is a thermostat problem, I can buy one myself and replace it. If the problem is at the furnace I most likely will call repairman.

ANSWER:

Furnace has an issue that a tech needs to fix. Plain and simple...what it is, since you gave no other information, and we cant see it, could be any one of a myriad of items. Call a tech.
