QUESTION:I picked up a used house furnace to use in my garage. The previous
owner had been using it in his garage, it just sat on the floor and
pulled air in the side at out the top. I will probably mount it to
the ceiling. I'm trying to find out what size wire I need to run to
it. It has four heating elements. One is broken and disconnected, and I'm
going to disconnect one more. I will be left with two 4.8kw elements.
There are two 60A breakers built into the furnace. I will only be
using one breaker, the other one will be turned off and disconnected.
The way I measure it, at 240v it will be drawing 40 amps, plus some
for the blower. The wire run from the garage subpanel to the furnace
will be about 20 feet. What size wire and breaker will I need in the
subpanel for it?
ANSWER: Figuring at 220v I come up with 43.6 amps--the fan shouldnt draw very much
power but will bring you even closer to 50 amps. I would probly just go with a 60 amp DP breaker in the panel and for a
fairly short run use #4 copper wire.
