QUESTION:If you have a Lennox Pulse gas heating system in you house,
would you comment on the noise? If you'd replace it, would
you get a Lennox Pulse again? I am trying to select between
a Carrier (92 AFUE) and a Lennox Pulse21 (94 AFUE). I like the
high tech side of Lennox but am not sure if the noise is going
to be noticablely higher than that from the Carrier. I know it
make a different kind of sound (from combustion), over on top of
the blower. Also, since I have a heat pump in the house right now, some
heating contractors have proposed to install the new gas unit
side by side next to the heat pump. It appeals to me to have
the heat pump still there just in case the gas line is out in
the winter. I understand that between seasons I have to go down
to the basement to switch the dampers etc, and it'd take more space
in the basement for this kind of installation. Would some netters
in the know comment on this as well?
ANSWER: The Pulse makes kind of a "putt putt putt" sound while it's running. Several
people here have complained about the sound, but my Dad's had a Pulse for
several years and as long as you get the optional muffler there's no real noise
at all. The one BAD thing about Pulse furnaces (at least so far) is that the unit has
a computer control board that the local Lennox dealer admits they've had
problems with. This board costs about $200 and the one in my Dad's unit has
died twice in ten years. Note that this pretty much obliterates any energy
cost savings from purchasing the more efficient unit in the first place.
