QUESTION:My home is heated with a gas floor furnace. Several times this weekend the
pilot light was blown out when the furnace came on. Under certain
conditions the furnace starts violently, that is, it sounds like a small
exlplosion inside the furnace. This is when the pilot light is blow out.
This seems to happen at lower thermostat settings. The furnace seems to
start smoothly at warmer settings. I have a repairman scheduled for tomorrow, but I would like to have some
idea of what the problem could be and what kind of repair or service to
expect.
ANSWER: I hope the service tech is not some young pup because he'd be unlikely be up
on floor furnaces.Sound like you need a good clean and check. The burner
should be removed and cleaned along with the pilot assembly. If it has a
thermocouple and not a powerpile you might have him replace it. There's no
future in keeping a termocouple that may fail and then finding someone to
get in the crawl to replace it. Also sweep out the dust bunny from the top
side and remove any junk that may have fallen in. These units struck me as a
accident waiting to happen with a grill that could cause severe burns to
anyone in their bare feet.
