QUESTION:For any HVAC experts out there, I have the following question
regarding my
furnace, please: I have a 30 year old circulator forced hot water Hydrotherm system for
my typical two story colonial. It's gas fired, and has the open pilot
light. The really great thing about this system is that we lose electric
power
fairly often in the winter, and it is possible to operate it as a
gravity system, where the main flame comes on as a function of cycling
between the high and low temp. limits. It works surprisingly well in this mode, and I would want any
replacement to have the same kind of pilot light and controls. It has
a Honeywell (I think)
milli-volt thermopile control for the gas. I've been told "milli-volt Thermopile control units"
that were used with open pilots are Not now available for Hydrotherm,
or any other residential forced hot water units. I've also been told that these thermopile control are illegal
everywhere now.
I can't imagine why this should be so. If anyone could tell me anything regarding the availability, and I
guess legality, of these units, I would be most appreciative.
If I have to replace the furnace, would sure like to purchase a new
system that would produce heat even if we lose power, as we now have.
ANSWER: What part of the millivolt system are you looking for?If its just the
pilot generator (looks like a thermocouple) I could go out and buy you a
warehouse full in about half an hour.Honeywell,White Rodgers,Johnson all
make replacement generators that come with different length leads. The valves
are a little harder to come by but ITT/General still makes them and I would
think most any HVAC supply house could get you one if you take the original
one in and show it to them.
