Gas Wood Furnace

QUESTION:

I am getting ready to install a wood furnace with either LP or oil backup. Does anyone have experience as to which is best? Most efficient?

ANSWER:

How backup is the backup?
Per gallon, and usually per dollar, oil has more energy.
Oil also stinks more and has more need for regular maintenance.
Propane, grossly mishandled, can do a better job of exploding, but I literally know no-one this has actually happened to. Oil does a better job of polluting the ground if you spill it or it leaks.
Propane can also be used for gas stove, gas dryer, gas grill. Oil is limited to heat/hotwater.
If the backup is backup, propane is preferable by my reckoning. If you anticipate burning a lot for heat, oil probably costs less.
