QUESTION:I decided to charge right in and change the filter on our 1950's gas
furnace. A bit of dirty work but it's done and marked on my "Furnace Filter
Change" card I just made to keep inthe "Household" section of my tickler
file box I keep on my desk. In the Household section I also keep cards for
mattress turning and water softener (adding potasium chloride). When should I chage the filter next? Should I check it in a month to see if
it needs it and if not then check a few weeks later? I suppose change time
may depend on how often the furnace is used and how dusty our place is. How long do these furnaces last?
ANSWER: My currently working furnace is much younger than yours,
I change filters once a month. If your house is really
dusty you may need to do it twice a month. The life of furnaces varies. I think it's safe to say
that a furnace from the 50's isn't very efficient.
A new one would save you mucho money in the long run.
Ask me how I found this out sometime.
