Heat Exchanger Gas Furnace
QUESTION:My wife & I just bought 10 year old house in the greater Seattle area (Poulsbo, to be specific). We had the furnace serviced & the tech
told us that a crack had developed in the sheet metal, which signified
it coming to the end of its life. The house has gas forced air heating & we were wondering whether it
would be feasible to replace the gas furnace with a heat pump (the
goal being to get air conditioning in addition to heating). Can
anybody say whether that's feasible, and/or a good idea? The furnace
is located in the (attached) garage. The duct vents are set into the
floors. No doubt I'm leaving out lots of important info--I can supply
more on request. Is there a good source somewhere we can educate ourselves on what our
options are & their pros & cons?
ANSWER: Crack in the sheet metal? I think I'd forget about it. If it is a
crack in the heat exchanger that is something to worry about. Heat pumps do work, the problem is that if it gets below freezing and
stays that way they become expensive because they have to use mbackup
electric heat to get the job done. If you have a cracked heat
exchanger price a heatpump along with a gas furnace with a regular ac.
