QUESTION:Here's an option I'm considering. I talked to my local HVAC company,
and they're suggesting I install a heat pump system. (York TriathlonTM
Heating and Cooling System ). I have an older natural gas furnace, and
the cold air returns need replacing. Would the heat pump be a good
option? I live in Michigan and it gets cold. I've heard that heat
pumps don't produce heat that feels as warm as natural gas heat. Would
the heat pump be a good choice for an older 2000 sq foot two story
house?
ANSWER: I am a York dealer, and I would not use an old Triathlon unit...it had good
ideas...none really worked...thats another reason they have not been made in
forever.. In your area, IF you go with a heat pump, I would strongly suggest that you
get gas as your backup heat option, with a fossil fuel timer added to the
unit.
Heat pumps do not produce a heat that is warm as a fossil fuel, and thats
fine, as even when it got below 0F here in NC for a few days last year, we
had no problems maintaining 70F indoors...and thats with a York heat
pump..but for your area, gas would be the better option..at least in my
opinion. I suspect that your local company has one left over that they bought, or the
supplier they use is making some REALLY good deals to get rid of the old
stuff, and thats why hes pushing it...I would suggest that if you are using
a York dealer, you ask about a Diamond 90 unit..or a package unit...or
anything but the Trialthlon unit...or find another company that will listen
to you, your concerns, and not install something that will be a troublsome
unit as time goes on.
