Heating Furnace Repair

QUESTION:

A friend of mine has a rental house with a tenant who has access to cheap diesel fuel, and wishes to use that rather than buying fuel oil from a home heating supplier. Besides the point of voiding the service contract from the heating oil supplier, does anyone have any comments or references to info about the advisability of allowing this? Are there any risks or other issues?

ANSWER:

ASTM D-396 Heating Oil is the specification governing heating oil.
Diesel motor fuel is nearly identical to #2 home heating oil. Mostly the difference is in how one is taxed versus the other.
Since it is burned in a burner not an engine the likelihood is that the stuff would burn just fine.
Your contractual obligations are your own look out.
The heating oil people may claim that their product has more stabilizers and rust inhibitors in it. These can be purchased at an auto parts store for a few bucks.
Where is his source of cheap diesel fuel?
