Hepa Furnace Filter

QUESTION:

The hubby and I have been considering buying an air cleaner/purifier for our apartment. I have looked around the internet for info on them and there seems to be a great deal of conflicting information on them. Couple questions:
1. Does any one here one the group own one? If so, what kind and how close to the birds?
2. Are ion air cleaners really potentially harmful to birds? I seem to remember hearing/seeing something somewhere that stated this.
Thanks in advance for any help, the ubby and I are having some bad allergy troubles this year and are finally going to break down and buy one.
Remember years ago they told you to move to the desert when you had allergies? Well, Phoenix is hell on my allergies. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I miss good old Pennsylvania where all I got was a little hay fever in the spring.

ANSWER:

I live in a small apartment and I have an air filter in the bedroom, my ringneck generally lives in the living room but I wasn't aware of any issues in regards to the ionising that would affect pets. So far no problems (and at the distance I keep it from his cage I doubt it would be harmful at all even if air filters were). But in regards to the allergies.. the air filter has been pretty useless except to make the air smell better. I spent a couple of hundred australian dollars on mine, but perhaps they perform better the more you spend. Personally my only recommendation for allergies is a new nasal spray thats been put on the market - its called Nasonex - I swear by it, I've been able to leave home without carrying a box of kleenex!!! . I wouldn't normally personally advertise any product but honestly since I starting using it I haven't had to take any other medication for relief! (not that I ever got any relief from anything else!)
The air filter may be good for keeping alot of the bird dust out of the air however... but like I said I'm not especially aware of it they are at all a health risk to birds if kept too close together (I really should have thought about it too). My recommendation is to skip the filter and try some allergy treatments.. I personally didn't gain too much from purchasing an air filter.
