QUESTION:Trane XV90 furnace and Honeywell 24V Humidifier? I have an XV90 gas furnace made by Trane and am trying to hook a 24V Honeywell humidifier to it. My circuit board only seems to have a 110V HUM common connection and no hot. I could wire from the main hot but in testing it, the HUM-N circut is open/on even when the heat/fan is off. I want the humidfier just to come on when the heat/fan is running. I could hook it to the thermostat wires (W/C) but I read a post that this could damage the system. What's the best way to wire it and why do they only have a HUM common connection?
ANSWER: You can use the 24v hot and install a SAIL SWITCH in between which senses air movement and energizes the humidifier when the furnace is on. These are availible at HVAC suppliers and will cost you around 50 or 60 dollars. The installation is pretty easy. You need to drill a hole in your duct and mount the switch with a couple of sheet metal screws. Begining to end shouldn't be an hour if you have the tools and parts on hand.
