How do I relight the pilot light on a gas furnace?
QUESTION:How do I relight the pilot light on a gas furnace?
ANSWER: Some real old furnaces have a small metal post above the pilot light. You have to heat the post and hold the pilot button pushed in. the pilot will keep the post hot. This is a safety feature. If the light goes out, the post will cool down and cut off the gas. This system is used in most propane hot water tanks in RV's. The same principle applies in modern electronic ignition furnaces. There is a flame sensor, that will cut off the gas supply, if the flame goes out.
Ensure the gas supply is on. Find the pilot light, ensure its supply is on. Then it is normal to press in a button and use the striker mechanism to cause a spark and when that happens the gas will light, but do not relax on the button yet as the gas pilot needs to heat up before it will stay on when you remove your finger. When you remove your finger the main flame should burst into life. The other type of pilot is a single push in and twist type. The push in allows some gas to flow to pilot jet and the twist action will spark the gas. Again do not release the push in knob to soon. When the igniter sparks you should be able to hear it click as is tries to spark.
