QUESTION:I have a really old Hydrotherm boiler, according to my regular hvac
repair guy it is almost as old as the house (30+) years. It has worked
well so far, but yesterday it stopped working. Had hvac guy service
it, he replaced the thermocouple and gas valve, and it is working fine
again. It is a gas unit , output 124K BTU/hr, input 155K BTU/hr -
both numbers from manufacturer's label in the unit, serves 6 zones,
honeywell controls inside., heats a 3400 sq ft house in Northern NJ. Anyway, I would like to replace it either this or next summer - when
I have some extra money (extra money? Is there such a thing? :-) or
atleast when it is not a crunch time ... My hvac tech recommended a Peerless boiler and will be sending me an
estimate. I would also like to replace my 13 year old hot water heater
and get a indirect-firect water heater with the boiler. The hvac tech
thinks I need a 140K btu unit. This guy has always done good work for
us and my brother in-law who used to live in the same house before
us. I also have a good Lennox installer who installed a new AC unit 2
years ago. He is coming out to look at the current setup and give me
an estimate some time this month.
ANSWER: In the boiler department, my former boss used to really love Buderus. In the
case of oil fuel, the Riello burner. I've not worked with Lennox or Peerless. An indirect water heater is an excellent idea. I've helped install several
of them, and they work well.
