Janitrol Furnace Part

QUESTION:

About 2 or 3 months ago, I replaced the HSI on a propane fired horizontal GMPN080-4, Rev. B furnace, a 92% efficiency model (serial # 990610517). I replaced the ignitor with the identical Norton one and made sure I didn't drop it, touch the silicon-carbide, etc. I also checked the gas pressure and it was correct.
I received a call yesterday and was told the thing went out again and the H/O, who went in the crawl with me to watch me replace it the first time, had checked and the 'new' one had "blown apart." I'm going out today to replace it again. This is the H/O first winter in the house. I don't remember seeing any old parts left in the crawl, which tells me that either any previous techs cleaned up their old parts or there hasn't been a problem before.
Does anyone know if there have been recalls on this furnace regarding the ignitor placement? If I remember correctly, the ignitor is place directly in the main flow of the gas from the inshot burners. This may be causing part of the problem.

ANSWER:

I have seen very little trouble with the ignitors on the Goodman including the GMPN series back as far as 1985 or so. This furnace being made on June 10 , 1999 from serial number date code is fairly made furnace for that time frame. Now it does have the defective inshot burners in it , Which is supposed to be changed out under warrenty but no labor. The only gas furnaces that I did install in the past was the GMPN or GMP. I have install a few other Janitrol gas furnace models but very few.
The ignitor that I have had trouble with is the ignitor head developes a crack and then waits 1 to 10 weeks to finely burn in to two pieces. I have had maybe 10 in 15 or so years. I just got to thinking here and I do remember one that I thought it was caused from the inshot burns puffing on ignition to the point of breaking the ignitor elementbut the puffing was not a boom but just a puff to the point of putting stress on the ignitor. The furnace had run for 3 or 4 years and then just started doing it. The furnace did have late ignition and was causing the burn flame to puff on ignition. I changed the ignitor and the inshot burners out and never heard from it again. Here is a long shot.
