QUESTION:I am going to replace my old forced hot air furnace with a new one and
have had several estimates. One hvac installer told me that Janitrol is
a low quality furnace and I should consider Heil. Another installer said
most furnaces are equal with Janitrol being of lower cost
because they spend less on advertising. The savings in advertising cost
is passed on to the homeowner. If I go with with Janitrol my
installation costs will be hundreds less.Is Janitrol a good quality
furnace (heat exchanger/controls/reliability/design and construction) or
should I consider another manufacturer. I want a good furnace at a
reasonable price. Also any feedback, good or bad, regarding other
furnace manufactures would be appreciated
ANSWER: Some swear by Janitrol, like my buddy Ken Williams. To me, I wouldn't
get within 5 feet of a Janitrol furnace. They are cheaply built, have
the most primitive control board, have had a history of heat exchanger
trouble which they say has been solved. They are less money but HUNDREDS less means some other corners are being
cut. No chimney liner, less metal, something. To me, the reason they are less is partly no advertising although they
do
advertise to the contractor. But more is lack of support in the field &
difficulty with backing up their product. They did have an allowance on
failed heat exchangers but it is murder getting them to make good on it.
Heil makes a good furnace with up to date electronic controls, no
history
of heat exchanger failures, good backup in the field.
