QUESTION:I recently bought a small house that has a Payne forced air gas
furnace (Payne Deluxe Mid Efficiency Gas Furnace). The house is about 20 years old and I'd expect that the furnace is the
original furnace. From appearances, I would guess that the furnace
has not been serviced in a number of years and it appears that the
filter has been ignored for quite a while as well. I have two question that I'd appreciate direction on. 1. The filter is filthy; it's surrounded by a metal frame. Embossed
on the frame is the number 310258-402. The filter and frame measure 13.5 X 19.5 inches. I had planned to get a replacement at Home Depot,
but in looking at their Web Site I don't see any filters this size.
Any direction on how to get a clean filter into this furnace would be
greatly appreciated. 2. I'm inclined to clean the ducts -- to the degree I can get to them -- using a shopvac. I'm planning to shopvac the cold air return as
well as other duct work that I can see and reach. Am I being naive to
believe that I can do this myself, or is it doable with some effort
and study of the system. Thanks in advance for any direction/advice that you might provide.
ANSWER: and if your suspect your furnace of being in poor condition, please have it
inspected before firing it up this winter. A competent, qualified technician
can inspect your heat exchanger, flue system, combustion areas, etc etc and
address any problems you may have. 20 years is on the old side for a
furnace; don't be surprised if you find out that you need to replace it.
