QUESTION:As for those filters that claim they can be cleaned by hosing them off
with water, don't fall for it. They need to be taken apart and the filter
washed in soapy water. Learned this the hard way - After hosing down the
filter every 30 days for 6 months, I got curious and took it apart after
it dried. Absolutely filthly! Took it apart and soaked in soapy water for
a while - you should have seen the dirt that came out. Rinsed, dried,
re-assembled, put back in place. Massive improvement.
ANSWER: Hechingers, and I think Home Depot, sells The WEB, a washable
electrostatic filter with a 3-year guarantee, as well as The WEB Plus,
with "Micropest Control" and a 6-year guarantee. They're adjustable to
fit any size slot. I've only had mine for a month, so I can't tell you
from personal experience how long it lasts. But considering we just moved
in, and stirred up a lot of dust while cleaning out the old place, some
of which must surely have come over with us, I've had no problem with my
allergies on this side of the move, so maybe the new filter helped.
