QUESTION:No dought this has been discussed before. If there is a better forum to
discuss this, please inform me and I will take it there. I noticed this
forum talks about everything.
I have a Heil natural gas furnace that I want to convert to Propane.
It is a 135,000 btu in/108,000 btu out (80% efficient). I read here that
a general rule was to go down 7 drill sizes for the orifices. I assume
that is 7 letter or number drill sizes as opposed to fractional drill
sizes, am I right?
What I also need to know is can I use the existing gas valve? It has a
pilot light adjustment on it, I hope it would adjust down enough for
propane. Do I have to put a regulator on the propane tank or do I simply
hook the propane line to the gas valve? (with a shut off valve of course).
Now although I plan on getting a large propane tank, I want to hook
this all up for test purposes, can I use a 40 gallon tank from my BBQ
grille ? I know it won't last long but would let me know how the furnace
would heat on propane without unnecessary expense.
This furnace will be used for a garage workshop. I don't need 135,000
btu's. It has four ribbon burners. I would like to only use two or three
of them. I can cap off the orifices leading to to un-used burner/s.
What are your thoughts and suggestions? I am a handyman, I just don't
have any experience converting website to Propane.
ANSWER: You should contact a reputable local service company to make the conversion,
money well spent, shouldn't be any more than an hour or two. Your messing
with a very unforgiving bomb. Unless your a tech this is not a "do it
yourself" project. Though its not difficult, you have to be 100% accurate.
