Replace Furnace Air Filter

QUESTION:

I'm looking for a sensor to use for monitoring the air flow resistance across the filter media in a furnace. Typical values are 0.10 inches w. c. (= water column ?) when new rising to 0.50 when replacement should occur. Is there a device whose output is directly (or easily scaled) in these units ? My thought is to drill a small hole in the cold air return ducts on either side of the filter and measure differentially with a sensor. Suggested sensors or circuits ?

ANSWER:

Yeah- He's the first person who's ever had to monitor filter resistance ?! Go to Dwyer Instruments http://www.dwyer-inst.com and check out the air filter monitor gauges Mark II series. The economy Model 25 handles 0-3 " w.c. with 3% FS accuracy, is intended for permanent installation, and priced to sell. It is a manometer. If electrical output is a requirement [ to sound an alarm no doubt] then Dwyer also caries several adjustable differential air pressure switches. If you go to an electronic or other gauge then get ready to spend big bucks.
