Replacing A Furnace Filter
QUESTION:What do you ask the frige or electrical or gas or air
conditioner/heater housecall repair guy? Hey, will you
show me how to do that? (thinking: I won't need this guy's
service anymore - I'll fix it myself).
ry asking him what the specialized tools and equipment
he uses to produce fast, reliable results cost. Ask
him how long it took him to get that good. Balance the
answers against the $85/hr you just paid him. Is it
economical to do it yourself? Depends...you want to
pay someone $85/hr to replace your furnace filter or
light your pilot? Probably not, and he'll even show
you how to do it while he's there. You want to try
replacing the firebox or the motor on your furnace?
ANSWER: In fact, in nearly 20 years of home owning, I have asked most of
the appliance gutys a qyuestion or two. They not only answer,
they *volunteer* information. Sometimes wven when I didn't ask. The last guy we had out was replacing a furnace blower motor.
He noticed teh pulley on the blower was also nearly shot.
He told my wife, "I can fix it for (whatever the amount was),
or if you or your husband are any good with tools, y'all can
do it. What would you rather do?" Why? Because (a) they don't really want to try to make a living
replacing pulleys and refrigerator door seals, and (b) they
know when we need something, we are gonna call teh guy who helped
us the most.
