QUESTION:I am a new homeowner and never used a furnace. But since it's getting
colder now, I tried to heat my house
by turning on the thermostat. However, my furnace did not fire. I check
the inspection report, it is a Rheem imperial 80+, Model RGDC-14EE1JS. I took a look at the furnace, but could not see
any polit fire. So I suppose the
pilot is off. But when I tried to light it, I could not ignite it. Looks
there is a rod beside the seemly pilot place, which
connected to a box labelled "Honeywell auto ignition system". Can
somebody tell me: whether this system use
pilot or what is wrong?
ANSWER: You don't have to light that pilot; a spark from the electrode "rod"
will light the pilot each time the furnace comes on.
This way, the pilot flame does not waste gas while the furnace is not
running. There may be an electrical switch controlling the furnace which
is turned off. If you don't find anything obvious, you may
need to call a local heating repairman. While he is there,
he can make you more familiar with your furnace.
